Minimizing my Energy Usage as Much as Possible for 24 Hours

"The secret of change is to focus all your energy, not on fighting the old, but in building the new"
(Socrates)

“Energy is defined as the capacity to do work; like all living things, we humans need it, in a biological sense to survive. But we also need it to run out our societies – to heat and cool our homes; operate our cell phones, lamps, laptops; fuel our cars; and power our industries”  (Houtman, Karr, and Interlandi 335).

Wind energy

Worldwide, every human being uses different types of energy in his daily basins; for example, a person can drive his vehicle or take a public transportation by using gasoline or oil that has been extracted through rocks and reservoirs. Also, people can benefit from wind energy. Wind energy is also one of the cheapest forms of energy available today and therefore it can be used by everyone, including poor farmers from rural areas. The biggest benefit one can reap out of wind energy is that it generates electricity, but does not release any harmful pollutants or gases as by products. This therefore makes it a safer and cleaner source of energy (http://energyprosandcons.org/)
Another form is solar energy, in this case, the form of producing energy is very quietly, but most important is that has the ability to harness electricity in remote locations that are not linked with a national grid. For example, the installation of solar panels in remote areas is more effective than laying the required voltage wires.
Saving energy to save the planet

Indeed, my experiment of minimizing my energy usage started last Sunday 25 by midnight. Yes, by midnight. First, I have talked with my daughter and explained the situation. (I had to offer her something as a gift if she helps) Since next day was a holiday “Memorial Day” I would be off of work & school, so it was a perfect occasion to work in our experiment; Otherwise, I’m not sure if we would do it as much as we did it now. Later, I have unplugged almost all the electronic devices at home:
Microwave
TV
Internet Wireless Router
Lamps (6)
Stove
Computer
Printer
Cell phones (2)
Alarm clock (2)
IPod
Electric Kittle
Coffee maker
Electric sharpener
Contrary, I couldn’t unplug the refrigerator since I have much food there, neither the electric water heater, this because I cannot operate it.

Trying to reduce my energy usage at least for one day

What we did?
The first step was to plan our activities for the next day. Then we followed our plan.  We woke up late on Monday. Then, we just had breakfast by noon without cooking (yogurt, fruits, cereal, and nuts). We just do laundry once a week, so we were free of it. We just use the community laundry room to wash our clothes. We do not use the drier during summer. Also, we wash many clothes by hand, yes by hand- washing.
On Monday we had an average of 88°F we have opened windows and doors in order to ventilate our apartment. By the time it was getting hot, my daughter started to ask me many questions of why we were doing our experiment; especially because she loves to watch movies on holidays. Then, I have remained her about getting her prize for helping me, then, we decided to read instead watching movies. Also, we slept a nap…it was a long one. After that, we did a long walk with our dog (it was a double one). Back home, we had lunch-dinner: sandwiches, salads, hummus, fruit, and any other cold food. Later, when started getting dark, we lit many candles. We have talked a lot with my daughter. Also, we have played with our dogie more that we usually do. At this moment, I have used a camera to take some pictures of our candlelight. The camera uses rechargeable batteries.

Enough light for our back yard

Candlelight everywhere

A candlelight dinner

Which changes I will be willing to continue?  I really loved my experiment, because we have spent more time with my daughter. We have talk and talk, read and talk, play with the dog and talk, and I really enjoyed it. In addition, I will be willing to cut back many things in order to spend more time with my daughter, for example we would decide to watch movies only Wednesday and Fridays. More, we have agreed to do not use computers, cell phones, IPods once a week. Yet, we can do gardening together, as we did on Monday.

Which changes I’m unwilling to gave up?
Since I have to drive to go to school & pick up my daughter from school, also I drive my car to work (Norco, CA) it is hard for me to give up using my car. It is not a commodity; in my case is a necessity. Moreover, I can unplug the refrigerator; since we use it for food purposes it is really hard to give it up. Also, the internet is another change that I’m unwilling to gave up; since I’m full time student, I need it for educational purposes, for example posting my blogs.

What could I do to increase energy efficiency in my home without having to give up conveniences or technology?
1.    Unplug electric devices every day.
2.    Plug them back only If they are need it
3.    Follow a plan; for example, agree with your family to watch TV less than usual.
4.    Read more about forms of energy, then decide which ones you can use or support the most
5.    Go shopping only once every two weeks (make a list and do all shopping needed it)
There are more alternatives, but the most important would be having the determination to follow a plan and having discipline while working on it. It doesn't look like my two short goals of “Watching TV only twice a week” and “Going shopping twice a month” might be the solution to save energy, but at least, I feel like we can do it, so we will do it.

Climate Change

What is Climate Change?
Is the alteration in the long-term patterns and statistical averages of meteorological events (Houtman et al: 393). Climate change is not a new phenomenon; for example, over the past two decades, the climate warmed so dramatically that has caused many troubles worldwide. For example, the United Nations, in his publication Climate Change, says: " Much of the evidence already seems apparent to the layman as well.  Most of the hottest years on record have occurred during the past two decades.  In Europe, the heat wave in the summer of 2003 resulted in over 30,000 deaths.  In India, temperatures reached 48.1 degrees Centigrade — nearly 119 degrees Fahrenheit".
It has been proven by scientists that climate change is warming up every second.

Is the Climate changing right now?
Yes, climate change is changing every second. The United Nations also states: " In the 19th century, an awareness began to dawn that accumulated carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere could create a “greenhouse effect” and increase the temperature of the planet. By the middle of the 20th century, it was becoming clear that human action had significantly increased the production of these gases, and the process of “global warming” was accelerating.  Today, nearly all scientists agree that we must stop and reverse this process now — or face a devastating cascade of natural disasters that will change life on earth as we know it. (http://www.un.org/en/globalissues/climatechange/index.shtml)
Equally important, we are not taking serious this issue. Why? Because we are busy with our own matters, so who cares about it. Also, we are very accommodate persons, however, since this might be a political subject, because former Vice President Al-Gore has been the most influential person regarding it; let's him alone with this problem. Indeed, it has been proven by scientists that climate is changing every second, there are many skepticism about this controversy.
The green house gasses effect

What does evidence say about  human's roles in the changing climate?
In the past few decades, scientists have discovered that the level of certain gases in earth's atmosphere is on the rise. For example, Two years later, the ferocity of Hurricane Katrina in the United States was attributed in large part to the elevated water temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico. And in one of many terrain changing developments, 160 square miles of territory broke away from the Antarctic coast in 2008 — its bindings to Antarctica having literally melted away. ((http://www.un.org/en/globalissues/climatechange/index.shtml)
We all are responsible about what is happening, but most guilty, the owners of the big companies, that don't care of the population well being.
The arthritics have become vulnerable since climate changing
How is climate change likely to affect our society and our world?
I would say that we are finishing with the last natural resources that we still have available.
"We must limit global temperature rise to 2 degrees. We are far from there, and even that is enough to cause dire consequences. If we continue along the current path, we are close to a 6 degree increase" (Ban Ki-moon, General Secretary of the United Nations)
In 2011 the world population reached 7 billion. It is expected to grow to 9 billion by 2043, placing high demands on the Earth’s resources. There is alarming evidence that important tipping points, leading to irreversible changes in major ecosystems and the planetary climate system, may already have been reached or passed. For example, ecosystems as diverse as the Amazon rain forest and the Arctic tundra, may be approaching thresholds of dramatic change through warming and drying. Mountain glaciers are in alarming retreat and the downstream effects of reduced water supply in the driest months will have repercussions that transcend generations. Sometimes, I believe that we are destructing our planet, with or without intentions, furthermore, it has become a political subject; since I don't feel comfortable talking about politics, because I don't trust any political system, let's got to the next point of view.
Most of the causes of global warming are excessive emission of CO2 into the atmosphere
Myth or Reality? Controversy and doubt still exist among the general population of the United States regarding climate change.
The heartland Institute says that global warming is not a crisis. But, what is the Heartland Institute? It is a national non-profit  organization that has been studying global warming since 1994. They focused their ideas in economics arguments, not in science. This organization is lead by Joseph Blast, he is a co-author of Eco-Sanity: A Common Sense Guide to Environmentalism, which argues, among other things, that global warming is not a problem. Besides, Mr. Blast have published a paper denying Global Warming which uses the names of dozens of scientists without their permission. After that, he had to remove entirely the names of the scientists since he had refused to respond to their demands. Thereafter, the Heartland Institute has as a Senior fellow and managing editor named James M. Taylor. Ms. Taylor is a legal analyst for defenders of property rights. Also, he is a criminal defense attorney who limits his practice to Riverside and San Bernardino Counties in California. The satirical blogs of posted by Mr Taylor do reference global warming as alarmist  and liberal propaganda. (ExxonSecretsFactsheet/greenpeace-project.org)
After investigating this, I have feel very impotent, because it seems to me, that there is more information that we cannot access; although it has been proven by scientists that global warming is increasing, and also if we don't do much to stop it it would be a mega catastrophe. I cannot understand why there are many bad citizens that just try to confuse people by saying something as above. Most sadly, that one of the principal precursors of causing this doubt and confusion is our neighbor: Ms. James Taylor. In brief, there might be a lot of money back this topic. Also, since it has become a political project, many people would loss their morals in order to make money without caring about our environment.
For James M. Taylor & Joseph L. Blast, from the Heartland Institute, Climate Change is not a crisis. Really?

What do I think is going to happen 50 years from now?
Since in 2011 the world population reached 7 billion. It is expected to grow to 9 billion by 2043, placing high demands on the Earth’s resources, I would say that definitively, if we don't do anything to stop the CO2 levels in the atmosphere, our planet would decay more, and more, and more. If everyone does nothing to reduce emissions then, Oxygen levels will drop dramatically making life on land eventually impossible in a natural state and humans will require technical assistance to breathe. All land creatures and most if not all creatures on the earth will perish. It will take man millions and millions of years to fix this if we do not move swiftly now. Every day the changes that we have to face would be harder to reach. For example, we would stop all kind of burning of carbon based fuels now. The issue is more complicated, since we live in the most free country in the planet: everybody can do wherever they want it, in order to reach their personal and egocentric goals.
The future seems negative

One of my favorite food: Dark Chocolate Almods

One of my favorite foods is Dark Chocolate. Since I have learned that dark chocolate is good for health it has become one of my best friends J This week, I’m going to share about my dark chocolate almonds that I buy from the bulk food section at Winco Supermarket. The code of this item is 2223 and it’s known as Sugar-Free Dark Chocolate Almonds.
Sugar Free Dark Chocolate Almonds from Winco Supermarket at the Bulk Food

It’s a multi-ingredient food? and what are the ingredients?

The main ingredients of my food are Dark Chocolate, Roasted Almonds, Iron, Calcium, and  Sugar Alcohol. The nutritional information per a serving size of 40 grams is:
SERVING SIZE 40 GRAMS
CALORIES 200*FROM FAT160
% = DAILY VALUE
TOTAL FAT 18G 28%
SATURATED FAT 8G 40%
TRANS FAT 0G
CHOLESTEROL 0MG 0%
SODIUM 0MG 0%
TOTAL CARBOHYDRATE 17G 6%
DIETARY FIBER 3G 12%
SUGARS 0G
PROTEIN 3G
SUGAR ALC 12G
CALCIUM 4%
VIT A 0%
VIT C 0%
IRON 4%

I have discovered that my chocolates have sugar alcohols, that is a type of sweetener used in foods labeled "sugar-free." You'll find them in chewing gum, sugar-free candies, cookies, soft drinks, and other foods. Sugar alcohols have about one-half to one-third fewer calories than sugar. For example, if a food label doesn't list sugar as an ingredient, but it has 20 grams of sugar alcohol, that is equal to the calories in about 10 grams of sugar. (http://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/sugar-alcohols)

Then, my favorite dark chocolate has 6 grams of sugar L Now, I’ll be aware of buying “Sugar-free products” I didn’t realize about this sugar alcohol ingredient before.
Do they look Delicious?

Where did my product coming from?
My dark chocolate almonds are manufactured here at the United States by a big corporation named Van Leer Chocolates Inc. This company also owns the company that distributes them, its name is JN Kidds Food Distributors. It is settled in Weymouth, MA.  Van Leer Co is located in Chicago, Illinois. What I have discovered is that the company Van Leer is a famous chocolate factory around the world. Also, they have a chocolate academy in 15 countries worldwide: United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, England, Switzerland, Spain, Poland, Holland, France, Russia, Belgium, China, India, and Singapore. Moreover, Van Leer is in charge for the Cacao Barry World Chocolate Masters competition every year. http://www.worldchocolatemasters.com/en/)
Cacao beans imported from South and Central America.
Van Leer is a big company that owns many other related companies (monopoly?)
At the company web page we can read: “With Van Leer, quality has been at the forefront since its beginnings.  L.K. Van Leer came to America from Holland and started the Van Leer Chocolate Corporation on Christmas Day 1949.  Right from the beginning, he made it his goal to be the industry leader- to make the finest chocolates “(http://www.vanleerchocolate.com/us/en/aboutus)

Indeed, I didn’t know that my favorite Dark Chocolate Almonds are coming from a finest companyJ!!!
At JN Kidds Food Distributors, my dark chocolate almond is sell as the info described above:
Product
Package Type
Case Pack
Bel Noir Dark Couverture 54%
Bag in case
1 x 30 Lb
How was it? Van Leer Chocolate has no information where they buy the cacao beans to make chocolate. Since United States doesn't produce cacao, it might be importing the product from Mexico, Central & South America, or from Africa. It didn't say at their page. I have contacted them but I didn't get them back.  They promote organic procedures in order to harvest their beans. They also process the cacao beans at Zurich, Switzerland in a bulk form. They ship the cacao bulk form to Chicago by sea cargo. It takes days to get here, because the cargo has to cross the entire North Atlantic Ocean. Regardless, the cacao producers have to ship the grains from their places to Switzerland L OMG!!!

Environmental Impacts of my product: The materials that cover my product are: thermo aluminum bags, which are not environmental friendly. Aluminum contains many harsh chemicals that are by no means biodegradable! L Also, they place it in a box that is distributed to retails stores. They also own the company who manufactures the bags; its name is Van Leer Containers Inc, located at Atlanta, GA.
My dark chocolate almonds are shipped in boxes like this one.

Also, the product is dispatched from Weymouth, Ma to  Winco Food’s Wherehouse at Boise, Idaho. This is a long drive: the truck will drive from the New York Trwy N to I-80 W, where there are 2675.82 miles, this equal to 41 hours, 8 min based on current traffic hours and weather conditions.
After investigating all this info, from a simple, nice, delicious dark chocolate, I started feeling sad, for too many procedures to be done just to get a pound of my favorite chocolate L
2675.82 miles driving to get my favorite dark chocolate almonds from Boston to California.

It is healthy to eat my dark chocolate almonds?
According with Dr. Lawrence Sperling, from the American Heart Association, “chocolate has gotten a bad name. It's blamed for acne…yet studies show its had little effect. It's more likely hormones and heredity is the villains in the pimple factor. Some worry that chocolate, like coffee, is high in caffeine. Yet one ounce of milk chocolate has only 7 milligrams of caffeine, while a regular cup of coffee holds between 95 and 140. And  let’s talk about cavities? While it's true that anything loaded with sugar will create problems if teeth are not properly brushed, the tannins in chocolate may fight the bacteria responsible for tooth decay. But the biggest reason to give your sweetie a heart full of chocolate is that it's good for your heart”  Also, Dr. Sperling conclude: “ Be sure to choose a small piece of dark – not white or milk chocolate—so you can get the heart healthy benefits of: Increasing your blood flow; Improving your HDL, the "good" cholesterol; moreover, Reducing your blood pressure, And increasing antioxidants in your blood. That's because cocoa contains significant amounts of flavonoids.—the same heart healthy antioxidants found in red wine, green tea, and various veggies and fruits”. (http://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides)
Dark chocolate is high in flavonoids and high fiber content

Conclusion: I would say that I didn’t realize the process to get a single product would cost too much, I mean, how many ways has my favorite dark chocolate almonds to travel in order to get here, at Winco Norco, CA.  Also, how many processes are related to produce it? I have summarized the process to get my product as:
  • 1.       harvesting the cacao beans from somewhere (Mexico, Central America, South America, or Asia)
  • 2.       Ship the beans to Zurich
  • 3.       Process  the cacao beans into a bulk cacao form at Zurich, Switzerland
  • 4.       Then, to ship it to Chicago, Illinois where is formally processed  using local almonds
  • 5.       After that, my dark chocolate almonds have to be packet it and shipped to Winco Foods wherehouse at Idaho.
  • 6.       Finally, it is shipped by trailers to California

In my personal opinion, this is a complicated process, just to get simple dark chocolate almonds. Since I couldn't find info about the cacao beans producers, I can imagine this people working for less than a minimum wage (in their countries). What about if there are kids or women working for less than a man can earn? I would think seriously to buy it again. If I don’t get back from Van Leer Corporation regarding my questions of where they get the cacao beans I wouldn’t buy it again. I will be posting my comments in a near future regarding this. By now, I just say that I will be sharing these dark chocolate almonds tomorrow at our class potluck J
Cacao beans workers at Kenya.

Today, Sunday 25 of May, the company Van Leer hasn't get back on my yet, regarding my questions from where they get the cacao beans....I'll be waiting for getting some news from them. Otherwise, I will keep my investigation till I can find at least some clues to my question.

RCC Community Garden & Other Bugs!

On April 24, 2014 (my b-day) I have attended a workshop at the Riverside Community Garden, when we had two talented speakers from UCR Etymology department. The speakers said that in our gardens we attract a huge quantity of pests, but these pests can be kill by natural predators. For example, lady bugs and black aphids can help us with the pests. We have learned about pest integrated management. But what is a IPM? According to EPA:
"Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is an effective and environmentally sensitive approach to pest management that relies on a combination of common-sense practices. IPM programs use current, comprehensive information on the life cycles of pests and their interaction with the environment. This information, in combination with available pest control methods, is used to manage pest damage by the most economical means, and with the least possible hazard to people, property, and the environment.
The IPM approach can be applied to both agricultural and non-agricultural settings, such as the home, garden, and workplace. IPM takes advantage of all appropriate pest management options including, but not limited to, the judicious use of pesticides. In contrast, organic food production applies many of the same concepts as IPM but limits the use of pesticides to those that are produced from natural sources, as opposed to synthetic chemicals". (http://www.epa.gov/opp00001/factsheets/ipm.htm).
The principal goal of the workshop was to show how to grow food in a sustainable manner, working with nature, by using natural pest predators, to benefit both the garden and the environment. Recognizing bugs that benefits garden, and those who may cause harm it, is a good alternative to farm or gardening without pesticide use.

Many kind of fruits & vegetables can be appreciated at the garden
